Dana Mengel to receive award from Jackson County Historical Society

Dana Mengel will receive an award from the Jackson County Historical Society for his musical compositions on historical topics.

The award will be presented at the JCHS Annual Dinner and Awards Banquet which will be held Jan. 23 at the Midwest Genealogy Center (3440 S. Lee's Summit Road, Independence, MO).

Dana’s work includes compositions inspired by the painting of George Caleb Bingham which resulted in a CD Inspired by Bingham. The music was also featured in a documentary film about the Missouri artist.

The award specific cites Dana’s most recent project The Oregon Trail Suite - portions which were premiered at a JCHS event at the National Frontier Trails Museum.

The hope is the full 21-suite symphony will be performed locally.

Other JCHS award winners are Mary Childers, Lifetime Achievement; Larry Short, Honoring the Past: and Drumm Farm for Children, Historic Preservation.

Music from the Bingham and the Oregon Trail project are available here.
